ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Hi, I'm Mel.
If you're the parent of a child struggling with addiction, I want you to know something before you read another word:
You are not alone.
I know how overwhelming, heartbreaking, and lonely this journey can feel because I've walked it myself.
Years ago, I was exactly where you may be today. When my son began experimenting with drugs at thirteen, I became hypervigilant. I was determined to do everything in my power to keep him from destroying his life. I searched for answers, believing there had to be something I could do to stop the downward spiral.
I pulled him out of school and quit my job so I could be home with him. I watched him like a hawk, searched for treatment programs, and pleaded with him to stop using drugs. When those efforts failed, I insisted he enter treatment, only to discover one of the hardest truths I would ever have to accept: my son wasn't going to stop using drugs until he was ready.
I eventually learned that no amount of begging, pleading, reasoning, or loving could make another person choose recovery. As painful as it was to accept, I couldn't love my son into sobriety.
Everything began to change when I found Al-Anon's Twelve Step recovery program. There, I learned something that transformed my life. I wasn't wrong for loving my son or doing everything I could to try and help him. Any loving parent would have done the same.
What I came to understand was that, in the process of trying to save my son, I had gradually lost myself. My world had become smaller and smaller until nearly every thought, every decision, and every ounce of emotional energy revolved around my son's addiction.
I came to understand that while I couldn't choose recovery for my son, I could begin my own journey of healing. One day at a time, I began reclaiming the life I had let slip away.
That journey inspired me to write Walking Through Addiction. I didn't write this book because I have all the answers. I wrote it because I remember what it felt like to believe I was completely alone. My hope is that my story will help other parents discover that they don’t have to walk this journey alone.
Before becoming an author, I worked as an early childhood educator and later as a registered nurse. Those experiences taught me a great deal about children and families, but nothing prepared me for the lessons I would learn as the mother of a child struggling with addiction.
I remain active in my own healing and recovery as a family member affected by addiction. I'm passionate about helping other parents let go of guilt, establish healthy boundaries, and reclaim the lives they thought they had lost. I am grateful for the lessons I've learned along the way. Each day I make a conscious decision to be fully present in my own life. I choose faith over fear, acceptance over control, and a life filled with purpose, gratitude, and joy.
Those choices shape the life I live today. My husband and I enjoy a quieter life near the beach in Southern California. Walking along the shoreline has become part of my daily rhythm. The ocean reminds me to slow down, be present, and trust that even after life's fiercest storms, peace is possible. These days, I find joy in the simple gift of being fully present for the life I almost missed.
If my story helps you feel a little less alone, then sharing it has been worth every word.
